School Council
School Council members are elected for each class across the four year groups. They are responsible for bringing items of concern and ideas for improvement or action from their classes to the Council. The representatives then report back to their year groups the outcome of the Council’s discussion
This process helps to develop a sense of mutual respect and involvement in decision-making amongst pupils. The children gain a sense of partnership and ownership while dealing with issues of real concern, and they have the opportunity to learn about their own potential to overcome difficulties and to achieve positive change. Children learn to listen to others and recognise themselves as worthwhile individuals with a right to be heard. They learn self-confidence, social skills and morally responsible behaviour towards each other and towards their teachers and support staff.
With adults and pupils sharing responsibility for aspects of day-to-day life, our School Council plays an important part in promoting an active, cooperative learning community.
This year (2008-2009), School Council has been focussing on two areas on which pupils have voiced concern.
School Toilets: Following classroom discussion and subsequent negotiations in School Council, there have been some small (but important!) improvements made to the school toilets. Liquid soap has replaced bars of soap, rubbish bins have been installed, and air fresheners are to follow! Older children have also volunteered for a rota to help monitor behaviour in and around the toilets, reporting to staff where necessary. As a result, there has been a reduction in the number of children feeling concerned about this very important area of school life!
